--- 7,358,400 Minutes--By my watch anyway ---

She was a giggly 18 year old, and had had her eye on this particular boy for nearly the entire two months he had worked there. She had spotted him the second day of his employment. He walked in the door and she couldn't help the smile that stretched across her face. He was cute. He had a nice smile and a kind face. She chatted him up like you wouldn't believe, grinning like a fool the entire time.

He left the office (as quickly as he could, more than likely) to get back to work, and she couldn't stop thinking about him. She used any excuse to contact him from that moment on. "Business" calls, notes on his car, notes on his blank timesheets, overhead paging, you name it. (it might be referred to as "stalking" by today's standards) Her friends were tired of hearing about this boy. Her family was tired of hearing about this boy.

He probably thought she was far too young for him, he was 21 years old after all. He was also seeing someone much older than her, but she didn't know that. He had sort of wandered from job to job and began his employment here after talking to a friend of his who worked there. "Sure" he thought. "I'll get into that trade."

This "Miss" was too clean cut for him, too cutesy. He did ask some of the guys there about her, though. To tell the truth, he may have been a little flattered by the attention. He'd never had someone have such a crush on him before. He probably didn't really know what to make of her.

You'd have to be blind not to see the interest she showed him, and believe me, the other employees far from blind. One Friday morning she finally screwed up her courage and called him to ask...

she: (heart hammering) Um, hi. Do you have to get home right after work tonight? (she knew enough about him by now to know that he lived about 45 minutes from work.)
he: (pause) No...
she: (deep breath) Do you wanna go to dinner or something tonight? (exhale)
he: (pause) *silence*
she: (oh no! what did I do? what did I say?) Hello?
he: Um, yeah. Sure. That would be ok.

She didn't know what he would ask her in 3 years, 5 months, 5 days

Arrangements were made and she could barely contain herself. She bounced around all day and drove her co-workers quite nuts with her bubbly joy.

Then it began to snow. And snow. And snow. It was a blizzard. With no small amount of disappointment, she called him and said that she thought it would be better for him to get home, rather than go out to dinner. (*sigh*) The date was changed to lunch the next day. (Yippee!) She was smiling again.

In 4 years, 7 months, 28 days, they and 150 of their closest friends and relatives would be feasting, not on lunch, but on a prime rib dinner. Dessert would be a lovely (and delicious!) white cake with a pink bow.

He called her that night after he had finally fought his way home in the snow. The trip home had taken him two hours. The two had chatted for an hour or more about whatever subject came to mind. Her cheeks hurt after that phone call from smiling so much.

They went to "Lucky's," a 50's-ish diner-type restaurant that was at Woodfield Mall. They ate, they talked, they saw a co-worker through the restaurant window, but luckily they weren't seen. It was a little uncomfortable, as first dates usually are.

She had to be back home for a "family thing" and he dropped her off and went on his way. She was plagued with the doubts that follow first dates. Did he like me? I said some stupid things. Did he think I'm an idiot?

The "family thing" that would happen in 10 years, 10 months, 11 days was the furthest thing from their mind.

Neither really knew what to make of the other, but they knew that they would see each other again at work on Monday. They talked and went on their second date the following week -- a snowball fight.

Pictures, memories, thoughts and feelings, some very vivid, some slightly blurry have since all blended together to form days, months and years.

She didn't know that she would be looking back on all of this 5,114 days from now and wonder where the time went.
