![]() The view out our kitchen window during the last sunny winter's day. Recent Hubby-isms: I do not know why we delude ourselves that life is predictable and safe, when it's really just a carton of eggs--always just one stumble away from being scrambled. -- from "The Carousel" by Richard Paul Evans. |
12.28.00 --- And Here's The Kitchen --- Just to add to our holiday fun, we decided to paint our kitchen a week before Christmas dinner on December 23. Those of you who are close to me know that I've been wanting to paint the kitchen for a long time. I had never really settled on a color or "style" for the kitchen and Hubby was less than accepting of the idea, so it's been discussed but never actually followed through on. The planets must of all lined up one day though because Hubby caved, and I finally settled on a color. We had actually picked out the color a couple of weeks earlier and I was still pleased with it, so Saturday, December 16, we trudged off to Home Depot, Punkin in tow, and picked up the paint. Once back home, we had lunch and planned on getting Punkin settled in for a rare weekend nap so we could start removing pictures and things and taping. That was the PLAN anyway. She was less than thrilled about the nap idea, and Billy and Tillie arrived for a visit just after we finally told Punkin if she didn't want to nap, she would have to play quietly in her room. That second option usually leads to a nap if we're lucky. We visited with Billy and Tillie and a little while later, Punkin was "sprung" from her room. Since the kitchen was in upheaval, I opted for ordering pizza for dinner. It was a bit after that that Billy and Tillie left for home, and Punkin was tucked in for the night. We finally began painting the kitchen around 8:00pm that evening, and were done, except for trimming out the ceiling by 11:30pm. It was a long day for Hubby who had been at work that morning by 6:00am, and he said that he would do the work around the ceiling the following day. I cocked an eyebrow, looked at him and said "OR... we could get a border to put up and you wouldn't have to trim the ceiling." He was just tired enough to agree to that plan. He also knew that I saw one I liked when we were at Home Depot that morning. So, after breakfast on Sunday, we made a run for the border. (Ok... who didn't see THAT coming?!) By evening the kitchen was done, there was even stuff hung back on the walls! We just stood back and wondered why we didn't do this earlier. It actually LOOKS like a kitchen! ![]() 1. Punkin Art 2. One of my Christmas presents from Hubby, a stereo/cd/tape player WITH REMOTE. 3. Oops. Those are a couple of Christmas gifts that haven't been sent yet. 4. Plates I use for decorations. I think the pattern is called "Sweet Shoppe" by Sangrio or something like that. 5. Look very closely. See those two little tiny objects? Those are two of the little mice Bonnie sent me. They fit perfectly right there. 6. Da border -- Butterflies and flowers in shades of pink, blue, green, yellow and kind of a blue-purple. 7. Da paint -- Champagne Sparkle by Glidden. ![]() Looking from left to right, the first arrow points to a lovely piece of French Silk Pie from Bakers Square. There is nothing finer, I swear. (I'm only eating the piece that wouldn't fit into the Tupperware container with the rest--honest.) The second arrow points out how we sneakily put a strip of the border from the wall into the section above the mirror. I didn't like the picture that was in there before. The third arrow points to the valance. A couple of years ago, I realized that the valance was all faded and yucky. Washing it didn't help, and I wasn't up for trying to find a valance I really liked. As an experiment, I used fabric paint to hide the worst of the color difference. It didn't turn out too badly. It doesn't match the colors in the border exactly, but it will do until I can get a new valance. (Right now I'm a little shopped-out from the holidays.) ![]() This is the view from the very corner of the kitchen. Now you can see ALL Punkin's artwork, both on the fridge and the side of the cabinet. ![]() The rest of the kitchen, although it isn't much to see. I've mentioned to Hubby that I'd like to replace that hanging lamp with a tiffany style one. (Not a Tiffany one specifically, a cheap knock-off will work just as well.) It will be a while before I find one that I like, though. I am so very happy with the kitchen now, I just had to show you all! Go ahead, tell me how cute it looks! |
