09.11.00 --- Intro To Internet Obstacle Course --- I've learned a few things in my Intro to Internet class that aren't on the syllabus. Like the fact that I can scramble up and over a desk pretty quickly if I have to. I've also learned how quickly a room full of students can become entranced by water dripping into a garbage can. The class is "Intro to the Internet" and I need to take it to get to the HTML class I'm really interested in. This class is not what I would call challenging, but last night was by far the MOST interesting class I've ever had. Around 9:00pm the forecasted thunderstorms rolled in with a crashing thunder and bright lightning. It was an immediate downpour. Moments later, the ceiling over the desk behind me began to leak. There was a garbage can already on that desk and somene had the forethought to move the computer that had been there. Apparently, the ceiling had sprung a leak during the storms that passed through earlier in the day. One student (let's say her name is Deb) was sitting at the workstation next to the garbage can and she repositioned the can to better collect the rain that was coming in. The teacher and a couple of other students commented on it, and class resumed. The drip became a drizzle, and as the teacher suggested that Deb move, the drizzle became a steady stream and starting splattering and sputtering and mere seconds later it became a river, then a fast-moving waterfall! Within the space of a minute or less, water was just pouring into the classroom! The water spread quickly and began pouring through the ceiling tiles all over the room. In an effort not to get wet, or trapped, I hopped over my desk and collected my books, as other students began scrambling to collect their books and watching in fascination as bucketsful of water just cascaded out of the ceiling onto the computers and books and people. I looked up to see water begin to drip from the ceiling in the middle of the room and we all suddenly decided we should REALLY get the hell out of there. The biggest waterfall, of course was in front of our only escape. One by one we ran out of the rapidly flooding room. One (smart) woman put up her umbrella to make her escape, while still others used their notebooks. Thank goodness many people still do not have the required textbook for this class. I can't imagine that we'd be getting much money back for them after this! The water gushed out into the hallway as we fled the room. Four people behind me, the ceiling tiles gave way and landed on a student. Deb fell when she slipped in the ever expanding puddle outside of the classroom. Once we were all out, and the door was shut, we all stood there looking at each other taking it all in. There was some nervous laughter and someone pronounced that class was out early tonight! So, let's recap... last night we covered email, signatures, netiquette, attachments, mailing lists, and the best way to escape a flooding room. |
