This morning as I was getting Punkin ready for school, she was standing on the window bench in her room. This window bench is about waist high (for me) and when she's standing, I can't reach up to brush her hair and put it in a ponytail. We might have to change her name to Little Miss Smarty-pants. |
08.29.00 --- Slow boat to Nowhere --- It's Tuesday. That means I have time to write an entry… Over the weekend we spent time with some friends of ours who happen to work with Hubby. The company they work for has a big wing-ding every five years. Rather than have a company picnic on these special years, they invite the employees to a dinner cruise on Lake Michigan. We found a sitter to watch Punkin (not a difficult feat) and we spent the night downtown with our group of friends. It was humid, but not too warm and the gals and I had a great time people watching, and checking out what we referred to as "the hoochie girls." They were everywhere. One had on a pair of zebra striped hip-hugger flare pants, while another had on a zebra striped skirt, and SHOES to match. Yes, I said SHOES to match. A pair of strappy sandals, with the clunky heel complete with zebra striped wrap around the ankle and up the leg straps. All I could say was Wow. I felt so out of it. I had on just plain black. You would think we would have had enough of people watching by then. A few of us gathered in our room and watched the activity on the street, on the beach, and in the water for an hour and a half before we left for the boat. (Yessirree. Never call us boring.) We had a great view of the pier from our room, and even watched some of our other friends walking towards the hotel through the park. The food was good, the conversation was fun, and the drinks were free-flowing. We watched the fireworks from the boat and oohed and aahed in all the appropriate places. The boat ride could have ended about an hour earlier, though. As we were boarding the boat, a steward had taken our picture. I was looking forward to getting ours so I could update the one from five years ago that I have at work. I was sorely disappointed when I received it. The humidity had trashed my new short 'do, my dress made me look dumpy, I had this double-chin action going on and my face looked like I never washed it. Did I mention I have a lazy eye that picked that moment to become very noticeable? (and I felt so good about myself and the way I looked before I saw that picture.) I'm not just being hard on myself, the picture is hid-e-ous. Hubby was equally as pleased with the expression on his face, and the fact that the wind had lifted a few bits of his hair, making it stick straight up. I haven't decided what to do with the picture yet, but you can bet it won't be put in a prominent place anywhere. (Unless your idea of prominent is tucked neatly away in some box long ago forgotten and stashed up in the attic underneath a leaky spot in the roof.) After going back to the room to change our clothes (yeah… like I'm ever going to wear that dress again…) we walked a couple of blocks to Timothy O'Tooles, a little bar that looked like it was off the beaten path. I had spotted a pizza vendor on the pier before we boarded the boat, and had been craving pizza all night. I was hoping to satisfy my tastebuds at the bar, but alas, it wasn't meant to be. Instead, I shared some good chicken fingers and fries with my hubby, and chatted with friends until around 1:30am. We were all pretty tired at that point and called it a night, making promises to meet up for breakfast the next day. We shared our room with Sim and Tara (we had two double beds…) and I think we were all asleep within minutes of lights out. I gotta tell you, though. Those beds were hideously uncomfortable, but the pillows were great. Tara and I were going to cop a couple of pillows, but we didn't want to pay for them, and we didn't have any room in our luggage. We did find another couple from our group to eat breakfast with, and managed to make it down the restaurant before they stopped serving breakfast, with 10 minutes to spare. I guess it was more like brunch than breakfast. We really had a great time. Next time, though remind me to lose 10 lbs, grow my hair longer, and scrub my face just before our picture is taken… bleh.
