6/15/00
--- My Summer Vacation - Saturday ---

This morning I awoke at 5:30am. Of course, back home it was already 7:30am, and just about the time that Punkin usually wakes me up on the weekends.

I dressed and ran a comb through my hair before venturing out into the sunshine.

Dit wanted to sleep in a little longer and I was more than willing to let her. It was her vacation, too, and I was looking for a moment to just listen.

I heard the waves
I heard pigeons cooing, seagulls squawking and wings flapping.
I hear the sounds of someone sweeping away the sand that was tracked in from the previous day's visitors
I hear men readying boats for today's adventures
I hear coffee cups and dishes clanking from a restaurant behind me.
I hear a boat motoring by

I opened my eyes and saw the blue-green pier standing strong as the waves lap at it's feet

A discarded piece of clothing on the sand. From my vantage point it could be someone's shirt.

Seagulls and pigeons sidle up to me as if to ask if I have any bits of food to spare. They wander off when they realize I only hold a pen, a notebook and a camera.

Tall palm trees and a rainbow of shops.

Houses stacked in no particular order up the side of a hill.

The waves topped with seafoam rolling gently yet persistently onto the sand.

The sun already beamed down on me, promising to get brighter as the day goes on. It's giving me light to write by and making shadows on my paper.

The trickle of other vacationers is slowly becoming greater. They are holding paper coffee cups and planning their days.

My derriere is chilled from sitting on the stone bench and I smell the mouth-watering promise of bacon.

The sun is getting stronger as I sit and write all this down. I struggle to take in as much as I can, record it, preserve it and carry it all with me always. You see, tomorrow we already begin the journey back to our real lives.

I was reminded of my little family back home every few minutes it seemed yesterday. I missed them every time. Oh, it's 4:00pm, Hubby will be picking Punkin up from school now. Oh, there's a yellow car and in my head I hear Punkin's little voice sing-songing "lello car" in a game the three of us made up last week. And yet..

I am very much enjoying this feeling right now and I'll be sad to see it end.

I can't thank my sister enough for this trip. I've gotten to know her better. I've gotten to know myself a little better, and it's only been one day.

I can't wait to see what today brings…

Later…

After going back to the room and lazing around a little more, we had breakfast at the Pancake Cottage, a very busy, busy place.

Dit and I walked and walked and shopped and just followed the day as it unfolded.

We lunched at Pete's Place, a hot dog shack (it's bigger than a stand, but not quite a restaurant). Dit read my tarot cards which she purchased at a lovely shop called Bay Of The Seven Moons. We got some really great purses there, too.

isn't something missing from this picture?

We took the $10 Avalon Scenic Tour. We watched the swing dancers. (Apparently there was some type of "Swing Camp" going on that weekend.) We caught a few rays by the "pool."

We played miniature golf. I won. By two points. It was a close game.

a quickie in a local 'cafe'

We ran into The Professor again and made plans to meet at Mr. Ning's in about a half hour. Dit and I walked down the street and made our reservations. To kill some time, we, of course, did some window shopping and happened upon a little store that claimed it was an Internet Café. It looked like a music store to me with a few gentlemen conversing in the back, and two computers. For $3 Dit and I shared 15 minutes of checking and sending email time. By the time we were done, it was time to meet The Professor and Mary Anne back at the restaurant.

It was hard to tell which was better, the dinner or the conversation. Mary Anne is a lovely person, and I hope to see her and The Professor again soon.

After dinner, the four of us walked around and took pictures. As I was lining up a shot of The Professor and Mary Anne, I was the one and only celebrity of our trip. I'll tell you about it another time.

A little while later we left them to head back to our room. All that ocean air and sunshine wore us out. We watched a little TV and then decided to just shut it off before we both fell asleep.

Just before I nodded off I realized there would be no long talks in the dark, slumber-party style tonight. We were both goners way too soon.

Tomorrow is Sunday. The day we go home. Jeez, that was fast.
