05/10/00 --- Pesty Guesties --- There is a spider in our upstairs bathroom. Most of the spiders we get hang out in the downstairs bathroom, but we get about one or two maverick spiders a year upstairs. I've spotted this spider, let's call him...Dan*, on the ceiling in our bathroom for about three days now. Dan looks like your ordinary, every day house spider, although, so did the spiders in Arachnaphobia. He plays hide and seek with me. Sometimes he's there, sometimes he's not. I'll go into the bathroom for something (answering nature's call, picking up dirty towels, whatever), flip the light on, check for Dan on the ceiling, and find he's not there. Hmm. I quickly scan the rest of the ceiling, the walls, still no sign of him. I'll go back into the bathroom a few minutes later and there he is, in the same spot on the ceiling where I've seen him before. When I don't see him, I wonder where he is. There are plenty of places Dan could hide. Places like under the trim around the doors, the vent/fan in the bathroom, behind the border near the top of the walls. Lots of nooks that are conducive to hiding spiders, yet whenever I do see him, he is in that same spot on the ceiling. At 5:00 this morning, I didn't see him. At 5:05, there he is. I even said "Oh, there you are. Good morning, Dan." He didn't answer me. He doesn't say much. I began wondering why he's there. I don't know what he's living on in that bathroom. Any "pests" we get are usually in the downstairs bathroom. Surely our upstairs bathroom has got to be the desert of the spider world. Maybe he enjoys the solitude. Maybe he's on a self-imposed fast because of his belief in some worthy spider-land cause. Maybe he's just lost. Maybe he's just taunting me. I wish he'd come down off the ceiling. Then I could squish him. On second thought, let's call him Dead. *Name probably changed, although I don't know for
sure. His name could very well be Dan.
