4/14/00
--- When it rains, it pours ---

For two nights this week we fought to do everything we could to stop the flood. It was a mighty battle of wills. There is no winner or loser, only perseverance and the ebb and flow of patience.

I already mentioned one of the nights here.

After another good day at work, I arrived to extract Punkin from daycare. She did not want to leave and I ended up hefting her up and carrying her out. The kicking and screaming didn't start until I tried to get her into her car seat. Ten minutes later we were on the way home.

Punkin was greeted at the door by Hubby and everything was great for the first few minutes. I can't remember now what set her off, but suddenly great wails could be heard, the rain started to fall, and it was the end of the world.

After a while she calmed down and we sat down to dinner. She took one look, announced she didn't like it, and refused to eat anything besides her fruit. More tears shortly after that and another night of her getting to bed early.

I didn't have high hopes for last night. In fact, I almost dreaded it. I arrived at daycare and found myself in the eye of the storm, you know, the calm quiet part. It was spooky.

Getting out of daycare and into the car seat was a breeze, we were on our way home in under 10 minutes.

Punkin busied herself with the water from the kitchen sink while I made Nestle Tollhouse break and bake cookies, dinner, and lunches for today. (Punkin didn't help make the cookies. She told me she didn't like cookies, she likes fruit. I'll remind her of that in a few years.) She picked what she wanted to eat for dinner, hot dogs, and ate every last morsel. I called Dit while Punkin was in the tub splashing around, and got to chat for quite a while. Soon Dit was treated to the sounds of a naked toddler running loose in our house--with the cordless phone. After the bath, she had time to watch Elmo and then went to bed without a fuss at the normal time.

I could hardly believe my good fortune. What a wonderful break that was.

This evening it looked as though the storm was again gaining strength, and then it just dissipated. She is now playing happily. The sky is looking clear. I don't see anything foreboding in the forecast. I'll leave my umbrella out just in case.
