3/26/00 --- Don't Open That closet! --- We moved from a small one bedroom apartment into our townhouse about a year after we were married. Oh! All the R--O--O--M we gained! The townhouse is twice the size of that apartment. We had room we didn't even know what to do with! We slowly but surely filled our spaces nicely as time worn on. Then, our daughter was born. She is the first grandchild/great-grandchild born to our respective families. There were several family members who had been awaiting her arrival for years. They quickly began making up for lost time. Holy Cow. It's not the babies that take up all the room, it's the accessories that accompany them. Looking for a bouncy seat that vibrates? We got it. How about a cute little bunny mobile? Got it. One of those exer-saucer dealies? Got it. Carrier? Changing table? Crib? Mattress? Safety gates? Ditto on all of it. So what, right? Kids need (most) of that stuff, sure, but only for a little while. Our daughter is now approaching two and a half. All that stuff listed above is currently residing in her closet, along with all the clothes and toys she's outgrown, my maternity clothes, various king-size comforters, several duffel bags, blankets, a pillow or two, the china set and fancy silverware we registered for when we got married, my wedding dress (appropriately preserved in a box with a see through lid), books, more books, and the humidifier Punkin needed the first year of her life. You're probably thinking, "why don't you put that stuff in the attic or something?" Well, that would be a grand idea, if only we had room there, or in the crawl space or any of the other closets and cubby holes we have. We've just plum run out of room, so now we're taking steps to "make room". Hubby cleaned out his "toy box" by selling his "spare" ATV and trading in his crotch rocket. Sure, he recently purchased a bigger motorcycle, but there is still a little more room to be had in his garage now. We've placed Rufus in a new home. This meant we suddenly had more room in the cabinets where we kept his food, and in the corner downstairs where his litter box resided! (Hey, every little bit helps!) We've purchased a "real desk" for our "office" and have reworked that space to accommodate our two computers and now two desks. (We'll both be able to be on our computers at the same time without getting in each other's way! Woo-hoo!) We'll be selling our exercise bike and probably a microwave cart we've housed in our makeshift office for a while. I've begun cleaning out my closet and was able to part with several pairs of boots and shoes I no longer wear. (I'm now down to only about a dozen pairs of shoes.) For my next feat (feet?), I plan to tackle the top of the closet and the dresser. We're hooked on "finding space." We'd clear out all those baby accessories if we didn't think God would just laugh and bless Punkin with a sibling as soon as the junk truck pulled away with the last little onesie inside. I'm seeing a LOT of trips to the Salvation Army in our future. Heh. Maybe we just put up a sign that says "Open House Sale" and have people come in and buy anything that appeals to them. Sure, we could rent a storage space somewhere, but wouldn't it be more economical to have people pay us to haul our stuff away, then for us to pay someone to store it for us until we have time to sort through it all again? Yeah. I like that idea. Come and buy our stuff. That way we get to start over.
